OBSERVATION
The candidate is supposed to have spent about six weeks in his new school. He is required to write to his father telling him about his experiences in the new school. The emphasis is on ‘experiences’. The candidate is expected to recount the events and activities in which he has been personally involved, and their impact on him. Most of the compositions on this topic dwelt much on comparing the old and new school with regard to facilities.


Question 2

Write an article suitable for publication in your school magazine on the dangers of keeping bad company in school.


OBSERVATION
This is an article for publication in the school magazine. The candidate is required to write on the dangers of keeping bad company in school.  The exposition should show that the candidate understands what ‘keeping bad company’ means. He should dwell on ‘dangers’ and treat the subject in a school context. The few compositions on this topic were quite weak in these important demands of the topic.


Question 3

Activities such as debates, drama and excursions are now rare in schools in your country. As the Senior Prefect, write a letter to your principal suggesting the revival of these activities and pointing out what students stand to gain from taking part in them


OBSERVATION
The candidate is required to write a letter to his principal suggesting the revival of activities such as debates, drama and excursions in his school. He is also required to point out what students stand to gain from taking part in these activities. Most of the candidates who answered this question covered both aspects of it and were able to offer relevant content.


Question 4

You are the Chief Speaker in a debate on the topic: Violent video games should be banned.


OBSERVATION
This is a debate on the topic’ Violent video games should be banned.’ The speech should be either for or against the topic. There were few attempts on this question and in most cases the writers did not pay sufficient attention to the word ‘violent’. Very little was said about the harm or danger associated with violent video games.



Question 5

Write a story to illustrate the saying: Where there’s a will, there’s a way.


OBSERVATION
The candidate is required to write a story to illustrate the saying ‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way’. The saying means that if one really wants to do something, one will find a way to succeed. Most candidates who wrote on it showed a good understanding of it. They were able to formulate stories that showed ‘will’ and ‘way’.



Question 6

(COMPREHENSION)


OBSERVATION
The passage was interesting and didactic. The subject matter was within the experience and grasp of the candidates and the information required for answering content questions correctly was very clear in the passage. Nevertheless, some of the candidates did not demonstrate a clear understanding of the passage. Such candidates simply resorted to copying portions of the passage as answers.
