Christmas is a day marked specifically at the last month of the year, December and precisely on the 25th of the said month for the celebration of the birth of Christ, our savior. That I believe the lay man defines and see it as, maybe even you reading this. But is that all about Christmas and the mass reason for its celebration. Remember the birth of Jesus was not just ordinary as that of the normal human being.
Nevertheless, his birthing was for a very specific reason (salvation and redemption of man) and special, which all basically shaped the basis for his celebration – Christmas (the birth of Jesus).
Nowadays, all in the name of the same Christmas celebration many including the so-called Christians, who don’t understand
(1) The reason for the season,
(2) What Christ came to do and did for us,
…ends up in selfish, self-willed and ungodly behaviors and activities which give more weight to sin into their life.
However, below I carefully stated and threw light into best and godly ways to celebrate Christmas and escape God’s wrath which are for the sons of disobedience.
1) Glorify God in truth and spirit
Anyway, Christmas is all about celebration everyone knows but what again that matters is how you carry out your own celebration. That is to say, the manner of celebration one attributes to Christmas matters a lot. Some many people do misuse this privileged and end up bringing God’s wrath upon them by engaging in dirty behaviors and activities all in the name of Christmas celebration. Remember, the Bible tells us, we shouldn’t use our freedom to now do as it pleases us – that is glorifying ourselves and the devil.
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery – Galatians 5:1.
Perhaps, according to the gospel of Luke, the bible recorded that Angels that came down from heaven and informed the Shepherd of the birth of the new-born king – Jesus were very joyful and the bible made us to understand, they worshiped and glorify God marvelously prior to that. The Shepherds equally was seen doing the same (see Luke 2:8:20).
The psalmist says, “let the high praise be in your mouths…” Praise becomes the other of the day. The Shepherds praised and glorified God for the birth of our savior, redemption and freedom. How do you too glorify God? Does your celebration really glorify God of a truth or men? Remember Christmas is made of two words – Christ and Mass. Do you join those who exclude the Christ and just celebrate the Masses (people and their lifestyles)?
The Bible tells us, those who must worship God must worship him in truth and the spirit – John 4:24. True celebration of Christmas must have in it the fullness of God’s love, peace and faithfulness. I want to urge you never to celebrate yours as the world do by engaging in un-godly/holy activities which displeases God and Christians should know just as the bible tells us, though we are in the world, we are not of the of the world.
Perhaps, the world does celebrate theirs in places like party clubs, with premarital lovers, on the bed of fornication and adultery. Moreover, you can’t claim to be glorifying God while all of your celebrations are lawless, which the bible according to the epistle of John said is Sin – “sin is lawlessness – 1 John 3:4.
However, good and godly celebration should be done with high spiritual praises, worship and thanksgiving songs and not on the bed of fornication and in sinful activities.
2) Tell others about Christ
When the Shepherds got the news of the birth of our Savior – Jesus from the Angels, they quickly hurried up to Bethlehem, in the city of David as told by the Angel and confirmed. Oh! What an amazing surprise and joy they would feel seeing the long-awaited messiah that has been spoken of many years ago by prophets of old. Truly, they have seen with their own eyes. That experience should be their greatest moment of joy, I guess.
Then, they did something which most of us have failed at doing in our today’s Christmas celebration and that is no other thing than witnessing.
“When the Angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which was the lord has made known to us. And they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning the child; and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them” – Luke 2:15-18.
From the above bible passage, we see that the Shepherds who had just seen him, Jesus, never kept back the joy all to themselves. They quickly went away witnessing this joy (Jesus) to others. Such is what is expected of you and I, who have come to know this Christ too. As we celebrate his birth termed Christmas, we should in the same way tell others about this Jesus, if not for any other thing, for the joy of our salvation.
Let’s create the platform for others to enjoin us in this joy and freedom by sharing with them the gospel of Christ Jesus.
So one wonderful thing you should do this Christmas which I believe will attract more and more of God’s love and goodness into your life is witnessing this Jesus, whom you’ve received freely to others – friends, family, love ones, the poor, the rich, the less privileged, poor in spirit, pagans etc, both within the confines of your home and as you make your travels.
3) Give out tangible gifts
Perhaps the birth of Christ shows God’s love to mankind. In a popular passage of the scripture, the Bible tells us, “for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him shall not die but will live an everlasting life” – John 3:16.
There is no other love I’m sure will surpass that of what God showered on us and that is giving out his only begotten son for the salvation and redemption of heartless sinners like you and I. That’s love indeed. No wonder the bible tells us, “God is love and him that does not love, does not know God“.
However, Christmas, is a time to also show deep love to others mostly the less privileged and poor in spirit by sharing the gospel with them and as well meeting their needs as much as you can. I see Christmas as a true love season – basically established by God and can only be exhibited perfectly by whoever has Christ. In the light of the above, I urge you to free yourself from the dirty attitude of spending resources and time on frivolities and having incessant fun respectively, in the name of Christmas celebration which does and never will glorify God and then adhere to showing the true love of God to others within, around and faraway by reaching out to them with tangible gifts (like foodstuffs, bibles, Christians and motivational books, tapes, or video films, the gospel of Jesus, prayers, and the other exercises and gifts that could express the love of God) just as we celebrate the gift we had received from God (Jesus) which he, God has reached out to us freely.
In conclusion, I use this opportunity to wish you, HAPPY CHRISTMAS…. and pray for you for more grace as you abide to the message in this write-up and in your walk with God.
