YOU CANNOT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER
Shabbir, you are here! I was looking for you… Why are you sitting alone in your room? Why did you leave? We had been enjoying so much!” Fahad asked Shabbir to join the group of his friends but Shabbir was reluctant to sit with Fahad’s friends as Shabbir was a simple and shy boy. He was Fahad’s cousin and had recently come to the city to continue his studies and was staying with Fahad. Fahad’s friends were spoilt kids who belonged to rich families and valued material possessions.
Initially Shabbir tried to mingle with them but when he noticed that Fahad’s friends were not only avoiding him but also ridiculing him for his simple dress and looks, he decided not to be among them.
On Shabbir’s first day at school, the scenario there was no different. He seemed so different from his classmates who made fun of his accent and also teased him because of his oily hair.
“Hey, why do you put so much oil in your hair? Does your father have oil mills?” mocked one of Shabbir’s classmates. Shabbir could not take it, he hurriedly left the classroom and went to the library where Fahad was already present.
“What happened?” enquired Fahad and Shabbir told him the matter.
“Look Shabbir, you can’t give up like this! You will have to fight!” Fahad tried to encourage the depressed Shabbir.
“Fight? How?” Shabbir couldn’t understand what Fahad meant.
“I mean you will have to show all these people who ridicule you for being simple and old-fashioned that you are no less than them, rather you are much superior. You are a nice human being, you are intelligent and hard working too, so why are you depressed! Just show them your true worth!”
Fahad’s words gave Shabbir a ray of hope and he went back to the classroom where his classmates were still there.
Shabbir began, “You people make fun of me because I don’t know how to look and behave in a modern way. But you don’t know that I don’t lag behind when it comes to knowledge and wisdom and I will show you all what I am capable of in the upcoming quiz competition!” Shabbir challenged his classmates and all of them were shocked to see this side in Shabbir.
During the quiz competition that took place after a few days, Shabbir proved his intellect by answering all the questions very well. Those who had teased Shabbir for being old-fashionable were amazed at his knowledge. When Shabbir won the trophy for the first position in the competition, he went to his classmates but they were so embarrassed that they could not look into Shabbir’s eyes.
Shabbir, being good at heart, began with a friendly gesture, “My dear friends, I have no grudges against you, rather I would like to be in your group, so can we be friends from today?”
Saying this Shabbir put out his hand to shake with them. Fahad too joined them and said, “Look you silly boys! You made fun of my cousin who is a gem! You must be thankful to him that he has overlooked that and wants to be your friend!”
Shabbir’s classmates apologised to him and promised not to repeat their mistake of judging a person by his appearance.
